AN EIGHT WEEK COURSE designed to help you find your inner resources for reducing stress and improving your health and wellbeing.

About the course...
This course is based on Jon Kabat Zinns Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programme developed at The University of Massachusetts Medical Centre, and described in his book Full Catastrophe Living.

The course consists of:
  • A FREE TASTER SESSION of an hour and a half, to give you an opportunity to meet the teacher and the group, try some meditation, get more information and ask any questions.
  • EIGHT, WEEKLY SESSIONS each lasting approximately two hours.
  • AN OPTIONAL FULL DAY OF SILENT MINDFULNESS PRACTICE at additional cost.
  • MONTHLY DROP IN SESSIONS after the course has finished at a small additional cost.
In each session you will be taught various meditation practices: sitting, walking, moving and lying down. If you have any disability that prevents you from doing any of the practices, they can be adapted to your capabilities.
Throughout the session there will be discussions in the whole group or sometimes in smaller groups, to deepen our awareness about what we are learning.
There will be about six to twelve people in each group with one teacher.
There is no obligation to participate in any of the practices that feel uncomfortable and no pressure to say anything that you dont want to. You will be encouraged to work at your own pace and trust your own instincts as to what is right for you.

Most people report benefits from participating in the course and these can include a general improvement in wellbeing, increased ability to relax and a greater sense of control in life.
Often people find that while their circumstances may not have changed, the way they relate to them has, in that they are less distressed, worried or frustrated by situations that would have been a problem before the course.
An increased ability to cope with difficulties is a common benefit of practising mindfulness. This in turn can lead to a reduction in physical pain, anxiety and distress.
Practising mindfulness also helps us to increase our self awareness so that we can come to know ourselves better and recognise our own needs more clearly and are therefore more likely to make sure our needs are met.
Finally mindfulness can help us to live with a greater sense of peace, clarity and aliveness so life becomes richer and more fulfilling.

Making a Commitment to Yourself...
To get the full benefit from the course, it is important that you commit yourself to attending the sessions, and doing daily home practice.
You will be given CDs to guide your home practice and handouts each week with further information about the theme and practices from the sessions.
The teacher will be available by telephone in between sessions for support if you are experiencing difficulties or struggling with the practices.

So this course is suitable for anyone who wishes to take a more active role in improving their health and wellbeing, or who just wants to come to know themselves better and live with greater awareness and fulfillment. It will be of particular benefit to people who are experiencing stress in their lives (which probably means most or us!)
